A short history of Tiers
Tiers was first mentioned in a document in 999 a. Ch. under the name “Tyersch”, but archaelogical findings, namely an spearhead from the Neolithic, at the “Völseggspitze” show that already ca 3000 a Ch people have been living in the area of Tiers. Archaelogical findings from the Bronze Age and Iron Age have also been found in the area. Furthermore a large burying place going back to the Roman Iron Age ( 1th and 2nd century a. Ch) has been discovered when building the “Haus of Dorfgemeinschaft” in Tiers. Several names of courtyards and fields are of Raetho-Romanic origin and prove that human settlements have been in the area before Middle Ages.
During the Migration Period, several peoples, such as Bavarians, Goths, Lombards and Franks invaded the area and bringing to an end the relative florescence of the Roman Period in the area around Tiers.
With the invasion of the German tribes the area impoverished and the population decreased. Slowly Only slowly a rural community emerged in the Tiers valley. In the 15th century the language used was the Raetho-Romanic. The area got into feudal dependence from local nobles and aristocrats, as proved until today by the courthouse (see old schoolhouse) and the remains of the castle Völsegg.
During the 16th century there exist historic documents about witch trials and about the plague-periode. During the following centuries, no particular events took place in the area.
